The biggest thing for me out of the season finale was the confirmation of the Doctor’s feelings for River.
There has been a lot of debates and arguments - how married are they really? How does he really feel about her? What is her role in his life? How much does she influence him? But in this moment, when he turned to her and told her he’s always seen her and listened to her, but did not acknowlege because it hurt him too much, you see.
You see how he’s hung on to her, despite his own denial. You see how he’s taken her advice to heart, even when he pretends he couldn’t hear. You see how he looks at her and touches her. You see how he kisses her, like he’s longed for her for eons.
She is his River, his beloved wife, his sweetie. He held on to her until the very end of her timeline, and will keep holding on to her until the end of his.

I thought it would hurt ME.
It baffles, amazes and thrills me that this character, this man, can be so romantic, so passionate and yet so fucking selfish, all at the same time. And River, this amazing, compassionate, powerful woman lets him and she doesn’t hate him because he doesn’t say goodbye, she loves him all the more because she knows why. She doesn’t lose any of what makes her amazing, because she loves a man that pretends he can’t see her, because he admitted that he can, even when she’s not there at all. He sees her in his dreams, in his memories, in his hearts and all of a sudden, it doesn’t matter that he was worried about it hurting him more than River. Because the fact that he took her hand, kissed her lips and told her he loved her in exactly the way that she asked, makes their love so beautiful.

Generally I didn’t have a whole lot of problems with Clara’s sacrifice in NOTD — I would have preferred if it felt less time-loopy/predetermined, but that’s par for the course these days. And I think you can argue that the relationship between Clara and the Doctor felt a little…

So lets discuss how everyone fades from existence. My main question is this - if River is disappearing back to the Library data core, why doesn’t she disappear the way she appeared? Or simply blink out the way Jenny, Vastra, Strax and Clara did from the conference call? Arguably the scene with Jenny and Strax disappearing isn’t really needed. It was beautiful, and I loved it, but simply showing the star systems disappearing would have had the same affect.
Jenny disappears - we do not see how. She disappears because the Doctor saved her, and he is being rewritten, and thus, so is she. Strax’s we see - and I know the sonic gun makes it look like Vastra made that happen, but her face after he goes shows she was simply trying to immobilize him. Strax’s history is rewritten - because the Doctor never saved him, so he never owed him a favour and went with him during AGMGTW and met Vastra and Jenny. This is Strax, fading from this current timeline because his history being rewritten.
And River disappears in the same way. The exact same way. If she were simply going back to the Library, I think it would have looked differently. But if her own history were rewritten - say at the Library where Clara was - this is how she would fade out.
